Welcome to the Upper Crust Bakery, Gardiner, Maine
My name is Christine Jean Szigeti-Johnson. Since 1979, the Upper Crust Bakery has been in the business of making people happy with its fine breads and pastries.
In December, 1998, I downsized the bakery and moved it to my big old house (with three kitchens) in Gardiner. I needed an easy way to stay in touch with my customers. I started with e-mail and I now I finally have a web page. Since I live in a residential zone which doesn't allow a retail store, this page will take its place---with pictures, prices and information. You need to call, write or fax to place an order.
Because I plan my work around when customers are coming to pick up their orders, I appreciate a specific range of time. I can be flexible, so you may be able to come after work or on the weekend, whenever we both find it mutually convenient.
I am doing this web page myself, so changes will be made as I go along. When something is noteworthy, I will send you an email. If I do not have your email address, please send it to me so that you can be notified, too. This is especially important if you live locally, since sometimes I decide to do something special for a limited time.
If you do not see an old favorite here, ask. If I can possibly make it for you, I will. During the holidays, however, I need to focus on making the items I have promised. Thanks to my walk-in freezer, I am able to bake ahead, but sometimes there just don't seem to be enough hours in a day. For pictures of my work area, go to the History tab.
Be sure to check the recipe for the pastry pockets. It is easy to make but just take a little time. It can be divided into stages so you can have them freshly baked as needed. This is the type of pastry with which you can involve the family and pass along the tradition. (Besides having fun, you will save money.)
